House Fire (0)
I woke up to loud sirens at 1:30am. The unusual thing was that those sirens stopped somewhere nearby, accompanied by the squealing brakes of large firefighting equipment. When I looked out the window of my front door I was greeted by flashing lights in the haze of thick smoke.
I put on some clothes and wandered among the large vehicles, stepping carefully over the supply hoses running from the hydrants down the block to the trucks. There were several neighbors watching firemen attack the empty house on the corner with a chainsaw and fire hoses.
I haven't found out what caused the blaze. The house has been unoccupied for a couple of years. The "for-sale" signs had been down a while and I heard that there was a foreclosure coming up soon. I'm sure it wasn't electrical as there hasn't been power there some time. I suppose it could have been lightening, but that is unlikely.
I'm hoping it was accidentally set by some vagrants as opposed to arson. We had an arsonist in the neighborhood not long ago who burnt down a huge set of newly constructed condos and several detached garages and sheds.
