State Fair of Texas (1)

The State Fair of Texas is a month long event in the fall. Since moving to the area, I have been twice. Neither of those times did I really have a chance to take in the Fair. This year Karen and I took the girls and had a great time.

There was a little farm that the kids got to got through. It simulated working on a farm. The kids fed the fake animals corn out of a bag and the kids took wool or milk from them. Later the girls took all of their goods and sorted them out into the proper baskets at the market.
We also got to see tons of livestock and ride several rides. Francesca actually enjoyed a little airplane ride, while Sophia got a bit frightened (so did Daddy) on the big rocking pirate ship.

The other great thing about the fair is the sea of humanity and its observable oddities. Like the picture button guy above. I had seen these giant picture buttons for sale earlier in the day and thought, ”Who in the world would buy that?” Well I found the button patron. He drunkenly stumbled toward our table and had a seat. One of the things I really love about having a tiny camera is that it allows me to secretly get a shot of someone like picture button guy or tiny umbrella guy.
I saw several t-shirts that interested me. A 12 year-old wore a still frame from the movie “Old School” with the words “Hank the Tank.” A man sported the phrase, “I can keep ignoring you all day!” But my favorite was the portly young lady whose shirt shouted “Yeah? BFD!”

Finally we ate. As a snack at the beginning of the day, the ladies had ice cream bars and I had a chocolate covered frozen slice of turtle cheesecake. It is just as rich and yummy as it sounds. For dinner we all ate corny dogs. I have to say that while I have had many a corny dog, these were by far the best.
After dinner the kids had some cotton candy and I went on a search for a fried dessert.

The fair boasts many fried desserts: fried Oreos, fried Twinkies, even fried Coke. The hard part is finding them. I wasn’t brave enough to try a fried Coke and the Twinkies were too far away. I settled for a fried Snickers.
On my quest for fried goodness I thought of J.D. who has a soft spot for rich /sugary snacks. I will let the following three picture review speak for itself.
