Making New Friends (0)

Sophia has made several new friends in one week’s time. The first couple of days were a little rough. Most of the girls in her class had been in pre-K together. It can be difficult breaking into an established group. Today, as I dropped her off, Sophia ran up to one of her new friends and gave her a huge hug.

I thought to myself, “When’s the last time I made a new friend?” and “Just how long did it take to become friends?” In the last few years I have met some new acquaintances that I enjoy spending time with, but that time is limited to the time spent with a specific organization, like daycare.

Now that Sophia is starting Kindergarten, and Karen and I have gotten involved with a church, I know there will be even more acquaintances. But of those, only a very few will become our friends. People that we will spend time with, away from the organization that we are all involved.

The last new friend I made, I met about 5 years ago. We both had newborn daughters and met through mutual friends. It took a year to become what I would consider “friends.” Now, we get together so the kids can play and the adults can relax. But it amazes me that I haven’t made more than one new friend in 5 years.

At Sophia’s age, there is no worry about another person’s motivation, interests, or beliefs. There is one criteria—is “Blank New-friend” nice? If the answer is yes, then we are friends-- maybe even best friends.

It is interesting watching her grow up and change. It’s a shame that she will be forced to lose that guileless quality that makes being a child so special.
