The Last? Birthday Party (2)
Saturday was possibly the last birthday party for Sophia and Francesca-- if Karen sticks to her plan. When she was a child, Karen had family birthdays that involved a few presents from family members and the choice of where to go out to eat.
As a product of birthday parties growing up, I have lots of fond memories, but Karen's recollections sound less complicated and heart-warming. I had now idea that when we had kids we would be faced with keeping up with the Joneses (Sorry, Tom and Margie) on the birthday circuit. Even at five, the competition is brutal, and we're not into trying to compete.
So if this was the last real party for my kids, at least it was a good one-- fun with nothing crazy. Sophia wanted to have a girls only party, which when your kid decides to cut the invite list in half, you're all for it. Being a busy holiday weekend cuts the traffic a little more.
This was a "no present" party. We don't need anymore toys. Opening presents can be unpleasant with kids this age. Unpleasant enough to make you wish that you were in line at the DMV.

Making Butterflies
The theme was a "garden" party. We have a garden, so that part was a cinch. As everyone arrived they started making butterflies. Joan had the crafting table covered for us and all the girls had a great time creating.

The Butterflies
I fired up the grill as some of the girls went to arrange some cut flowers in little vases. Right before the hotdogs were served, the kids gathered around Karen to release scores of ladybugs into the flowerbeds.

After lunch the older girls got into the dress up clothes (causing a minor explosion of toys and whatnot in the playroom). After a few minutes of dress up it was time for ice cream cake. There was some confusion at Baskin Robin's about the spelling of Francesca's name...

Srancefa???
After the guests left, there were some presents from Joan and family members to open. It was a great little last birthday party!
