It's fascinating to see how a young mind works. I drove into the office early Saturday morning to finish a project. After being bounced awake and getting the girls some Cheerios to snack on, Karen began to make coffee. Sophia looked up with surprise, "Mommies don't make coffee!" Karen responded with, "Of course mommies do. Mommies do all sorts of things."
Karen makes coffee all the time, but I make lattes or espressos. (I know how to foam and steam milk like a REAL barista! Thanks Tom!!) And I’ll admit coffee drinks are more exciting than French press in almost every way. It's weird to think that because Sophia doesn't see Karen make coffee, that in her mind she can't.
We don't have the stereotypical roles in our house. Everyone is expected to pitch in and help the family. Now I better understand how roles can be ingrained into a young mind. I forget that what they see is reality. There isn’t an understanding yet of what goes on outside of our house at least in their reality.
Sophia and I were talking about shadows last night in the backyard. She has been studying them in school and mentioned the ground hog. “We’re going to have six more weeks of winter,” she said. It is now in the high 70’s here and the chance of even one more day with a high of 50 is slim. “I don’t think we’ll have more winter here this year,” I replied. “Well in another world.”
Another world. that’s what she says when something is happening somewhere else or in another time. The dinosaurs lived in another world. Knights fought in another world. There will be six more weeks of winter in that other world too.
Francesca had the other odd comment from this weekend. Karen pulled out a little toy vacuum and Francesca proudly wheeled it into the kitchen. "Look Daddy, I have one just like you!"
Now seriously, Karen uses the vacuum more than I do (although I probably enjoy using it more than she does). How is it that Francesca thinks that the vacuum is mine?
I wonder what other interesting ideas are floating around in those to little heads.
