Planting Trees (2)

A couple years ago, a portion of a large hackberry tree crashed into our home. Since then we have stared at what was left of it... an ugly stump. We have wanted to replace that tree, along with an aging mulberry tree in the front. The mulberry drops purple fruit onto the front walk for six weeks each spring, which we then track through the house. Last week we had it cut down, along with another smaller hackberry tree in the backyard and the big, ugly stump.

I built a section of fence where the stump used to reside. Karen and I went to Fannin Tree Farm and picked three fine trees. The Fannin crew planted them earlier this week.

Was wondering how your Chinese Pistachio tree was doing after one year planted ? I'm considering one for my back yard, too. Any inherent problems with this tree that you know of ? I live in North Texas.

I also have two hackbeery trees which I suspect I'll use for firewood someday...they aren't worth much else in the long run but do give me some shade now.

The Chinese Pistachio is doing great. It grew a lot over the last year. One if the reasons we picked this tree was that it grows relatively fast and doesn't have problems with disease, etc. It's also a tree that does well in this area.

We had 2 hackberry trees as well. The larger of the two got drenched during a rainy day and fell on our house. It also knocked down our power line. The guys who came to fix it talked about how much they hate hackberry trees. They rot from the inside and you have no idea when it's going to come down.

Hope that helps!!
